Gamete Transfer and Fertilization

Maybe there's too much of datin or too much of growth and development lately due to my BIology option paper, I just couldn't control myself to post this to share with you people!!! =) well, not necessary you have to be a biology student only you will understand this. you people have learnt this in secondary school ler...enjoy!!!

This passage is a little unusual. It presents the story of a human sperm in its journey from the testis of a male to the ovum of a female. When you are reading the passage, remember that the human characteristics (i.e. the ability to think and to have emotions) given to the sperm, is solely to help you learn only, do not get confused.

‘It’s not much fun sitting in this epididymis prison. Unless we can escape soon we’ll die a natural death. Only a few days before my life have run its full course. (Sigh) It passes awfully quickly. Formed in the seminiferous tubules in the testis and then locked up almost straight away.’

‘Future prospects? Poor, very poor. Either reabsorption into the body or to be flushed out with the urine- what a way to go! Hold it… Something’s happening… Hey! The walls are moving in on us. Good grief we’re being forced along this narrow passageway… what does the sign say? Vas deferens- This Way to the Urethra. Is this a reprieve, are we going to get out of this prison finally? Cross roads ahead… what do they say? Seminal Vesicles& Prostate gland. There sure is a lot of liquid stuff joining us. There are so many of us here- I didn’t realize but there must be millions and millions of us!’

‘It feels like we’re being swept up in waves- the passageway closes in and then relaxes again. There seems to be some light at the end of this passageway… Hang on fellows… wait for me!!’

‘WOW! What was that? Something just projected us into another wider passageway. Seems as if that’s the last bit of help I get- from here on in I’ll have to swim. The sign says Vagina to Uterus via the Cervix… everyone else seems to be going that way so I’ll follow. Apart from anything else, I’m being attracted to something- I don’t know what, but I seem to be pulled towards the top of this place. Into the uterus… nothing much happening, just swimming, swimming and more swimming. The troops are thinning out though- lots of them seem to have lost their energy and died. Wimps- it’s only been two days!’

‘Even I’m getting tired now. The sign up ahead says Fallopian tube this way. What’s left of us are following… hang on… what on earth is that… a huge sphere rolling towards us. That must be our goal mate- the ovum. Lucky there aren’t any more of them- one is usually made each month, but sometimes there can be more than one. If this one gets past us it will pass back through the system and leave the vagina, so we can’t let it go… not after all this trouble.’

‘We’re all aiming at our target now. Look at them go- Bam! Biffo! Thump!- no good, they’re not getting anywhere. I’m nearly at the front now- it’ll be my turn soon. The amour around the ovum seems to be getting weaker, so… maybe… perhaps if I… what about that spot… Here I go. GOT IT! GOT IN! HOORAY FOR ME!! Whammo, just in time, as soon as I got inside the amour went rock solid again- no chance for anyone else now. At least I can stop swimming- the ovum’s moving for me.’

‘Hey, where’s my tail gone? Dirty trick that, I lost it. Still I have the payload that the guards in the prison were telling us to deliver- ‘you’ve got 23 bits of information and you have to give it to the ovum. She’ll have 23 bits as well. That’ll make in all when you do your job’ quick aren’t they? 23+ 23= 46- takes real genius to work that out!’

‘Aah, I’ve got it- we’re heading for the uterus. Apparently, something happens and then we get implanted into the uterus wall and divide and grow for 9 months and something called a ‘human’ grows and develops. I don’t know what these human things are- they sound dreadful!’

‘What’s happening- the movement… the walls are closing in. I seem to be losing my identity and merging with the ovum- is this what they call an identity crisis? I think this is the end for me now, I’ve done my job, they can’t ask for more than that… farewell!’

exam exam exam... =(

Oh yea! I’m done with my trials! Last paper can be negligible as I’m so lazy to prepare it.

After all the late nights burning those midnight oils, stress, pressure, frustration, tearing my book into pieces, stacked my bed and floor with books and notes etc, finally I sat for my 12-papers trials last few days. I was a little under pressure as I didn’t really study during normal days, so much so until I nearly threw out whatever I had on Tuesday. I felt just so uncomfortable. So, I told mum bout it, and here comes another new decision!

my "beautiful" chemistry reference book

last minute clean up cz of wei lin wanted to come to my hse...but then he didn't come anyway..

those study nights when 9pm everything is all over my room; 1am everything is cleared from my bed and "dumped" on the 2nd mattress and table...

Mum is going to change me to American programme!!!

Mum said that A levels is not for people like me, especially when it is a crashed course (11 months compare to a normal A levels 18 months)! Can you imagine? Haha, well, I admit it though. I’m not all that smart, hardworking or attentive in class. I’m one of those happy-go-lucky ones, taking everything easily. This course is for those really smart ones, hardworking ones, attentive in class ones. Okay, maybe those above average or average, they still made it through but seriously is NOT easy.

Almost every decision I made since 2003 is a wrong decision! I started to become lazy from that year! Laziness lead me to have poor results in PMR, lead me to an average class in f4, became very ill-discipline, only study one week before exam or sometimes don’t even bother to study. However, still manage to go into a better class, changed a little more self-discipline but was too late, didn’t do really that well in SPM too. After that, I made another wrong move to enrol myself in DISTED for one year A Levels programme. Every move was so wrong.

If ever I was not LAZY, I won’t end up being like this, struggling to cope with whatever I had missed in my lower form!

If ever I rather spend a little more time to study, I won’t be taking up this crashed course!

If ever I listen to my parents’ advice to go for American programme from the beginning, I won’t be wasting my first year and also their money!

If, if, if…

Is too late… *sigh with regret*

************************************************************************

My final trial exams in this college… (I’m not retaking anymore) =)

On my first day, my name was not on the list for Chemistry P1 paper! After checking whether if there were enough exam questions for us, we finally got our seats and papers. Then, we went for the next chemistry P4 paper and Maths P3 paper.
Conclusion: Chemistry P1 was fine. Chemistry P4, have no words about it. Maths P3, I’m totally speechless.

Second day, all A2 students were laughing away when we saw the Biology P2! Is not because we A2 students are experience in AS papers, is because there were questions recycled from the last trial exam! Then, we sat for Biology P6 and Maths P7. I did something really stupid which I never did that in exams before- misread the question! Darn it! The paper consists of 4 questions and we have to answer ALL 4 of them, somehow I misread it and I did only ONE! Haha. When I realise I have to finish all 4, it was like 10 minutes before the paper ends. So I did only ONE. I totally screwed that paper up. In Maths P7, I forgot the formulae, I can’t solve.
Conclusion: Biology P2 was fine. Biology P6, I’m so dead. Maths P7, no idea what will it turn out to be. *sigh of disappointment*

The night I felt like throwing whatever I ate. Perhaps I’m just too sick of this exam.

Third day, Chemistry P2, again name was not on the list but we still went in there and wait for them to get our papers out. I finally finish up the whole paper! =) I skipped the next Chemistry P6 as I didn’t even touch those 2 super-duper L-o-n-g chapters. When I went through those past year papers, I was like seeing stars because I don’t understand a thing! Maths P6, again, A2 students were laughing all the way but not those AS newbie.
Conclusion: Chemistry P2 and Maths P6 were fine.

Fourth day, today, Biology P1 was just normal, difficult and easy questions at about the same ratio. I came out after 30 minutes to study for my next Biology P4. It was quite tough maybe is because I didn’t prepare well enough. The night before (last night), my mum came in to talk to me for almost an hour, knowing her daughter, ME, is still having exams the next day but she just didn’t bother. When I told her I couldn’t finish, she asked me to sleep! How great! I didn’t sleep and went on with that making of human insulin from bacteria. Haha, I sow what I reap! It really came out with the score of 10 marks.
Conclusion: Biology P1 and P4 still manageable but can’t imagine my scores for it.

Fifth day which is tomorrow, I left with only one paper which is my Maths P1. *sigh of relieve* =)

Anyway, even though I know I’m changing course by next year, I’ve already paid my exam fees. I’ve put in so much effort in this exam and I won’t just give up like this! There’s still at least a month plus for me to prepare and brush up myself for my final exams. BUT! I’m going to stop studying for this few days and replace all the sleeping time I lost days and weeks ago. I’m going to pamper myself with some nice food and some window shopping before I start studying again too. *wink*

The “P”s I’m talking about…

Biology and Chemistry – P1(AS), objective questions. P2(AS) & P4(A2), structured questions. P6(A2), option paper.

Maths – P1(AS) & P3(A2), pure maths, P6(AS) & P7(A2), statistics.

AS- advanced subsidiary; A2- I’m not sure what’s that “2” for. haha

exam dates and birthdays...happy birthday to everyone on my calendar list =)

Penang Inter-Collegiate Games laurels

Story by Joshua Lim Oon Tien, DISTED student affairs officer

In the 2006 Penang Inter-Collegiate Games, Kolej Disted-Stamford came in third in the medal standings with 2 golds and 2 bronzes, making the event a great experience for the DISTED teams.

DISTED emerged champion in the bowling and tennis competitions while its basketball and futsal teams ended up with 3 placing.

In bowling, DISTED lived up to expectations by winning the gold medal with an outstanding performance.

The bowling team, comprising captain Koay Chu Pin, Yeoh Chun Yoong and Muhammad Azli Azizan , was unbeatable with a total score of 1759 pins while its nearest rival KDU College Penang had 172 pins less.

The DISTED tennis team, coached by marketing manager Josephine Chan Ie Lyn, shared the same euphoria when they won the event by 5-0 in the finals against KDU College Penang.

Khoo Chung gave DISTED its first point in the tennis tournament with a convincing win over his opponent from KDU by 8-3.

Lam Ee Wen won the girl’s singles category while Khoo Chung Lee and Shaun Lim Tat Yang beat their opponents to be champions in the boy’s doubles.

The mix doubles came on the tennis court to seal victory for DISTED with a great game played by Daniel Teoh Boon Ping and Jean Lim.

As for futsal, the DISTED team defeated TAR College Penang in the third and fourth placings.

Team captain VK Sugumaran led by example by scoring 4 goals and Yin Li bagged 3 goals. Making the situation worse for itself, TAR College Penang scored its own goal which saw DISTED won the futsal bronze medal by an 8-1 score line.

The DISTED basketball team also came out of the game with a smile on their face and a bronze medal in their hands when they beat Institut Perkim-Goon.

The DISTED boys played smart and hard in the third and fourth placings which saw the man of the match, Chun Khai, fighting and scoring for every basket in the game. DISTED then went on the win the bronze medal by a 20 point margin.

“Now that the games are over, I would like to say thank you to all the DISTED players and also, the college management who supported this event and the teams,” said student affairs officer Joshua Lim Oon Tien.

“The close tournament was an opportunity to select players to represent DISTED in the Penang Inter-Collegiate Games 2006,” said Tennis Club advisor and coach Josephine Chan Ie Lyn, who is also the college’s marketing manager.

“The event was also meant to expose new players to competitive tennis as well as for all tennis enthusiasts of the college to have fun and get to know each other better,” she added.

The tennis tournament attracted over more than 20 entries.

With 6 years’ experience in playing tennis, Khoo Chung Lee won the boy’s singles category with a breeze.

“I didn’t face any stiff competition to win the title. Of course, I still feel great being the champion this year!” said Khoo who was roped into playing tennis by his father.

Khoo was the tennis bronze medallist in the 2004 MSSPP (Penang Schools’ Sports Council) competition and had also won the SMJK Chung Ling Penang tennis championship.

Intercollegiate games 2006

KDU has organised the 6th intercollegiate games recently. Obviously I can’t join anything else except for tennis, I can’t even return badminton’s serve, and how can I join badminton? What more can you say about futsal, netball, basketball etc. I don’t even know the rules yet.

Okay, tennis has only two, yes is only TWO participating teams, DISTED and KDU. KDU has only 5 team members; 4 guys and a girl. DISTED has 5 guys and 4 girls. This is how it goes; with only one girl in KDU’s team obviously we got a walkover from them for girls’ doubles. After reshuffling our team for matches, somehow I lost to Kesh in the “paper-scissors-stone” game and I have to play for singles.

Haha… This is so crazy, as I mentioned before I’ve stopped tournament training for 2 ½ years and I have to play pro-set (first to reach 8)! Well, I just go in as usual. See the ball comes and I just whacked like nobody’s business. There’s many balls flew up sky high or too long, whatever the point is as long as is out. Unfortunately, I dropped my 7th set! If not it will end with 8-0. Actually my mind was thinking of why can’t the game just end at 6-0 and that’s all. At my final set, I was chasing after a ball! Tum…I fell like a super girl, fall flat on the court. Can you picture the way I fall? Is like -> =-->0 something like that. Great! Another beautiful scar on my right knee, left elbow and left palm. They were swollen. In the end, I still finish the game with 8-1. *wink*

<-my elbow..

my knee..->

Boys’ singles, boys’ doubles, mixed doubles, DISTED won all! *claps* DISTED beat them flat 5-0! Woohoo… Anyway KDU’s players are not that bad too. The guys can hit very well too, they gave our guys a good fight too. Even if we lost, we still get a medal too, right? haha

After the matches, we went over to KDU for the closing ceremony. Great DISTED-ers, all in our own "jersey", especially for the tennis players. One was wearing a MILO t-shirt, one was wearing Penang state t-shirt, one was wearing Prince t-shirt, one was wearing some casual t-shirt, all with slippers, some were still in the DISTED super XXXL jersey and shoes. Looking at other colleges, all the players were so uniformed, same jersey and also in shoes.

this is what i meant, our own "jersey" with slippers!! =)

Prize giving ceremony…

We took lots of photos there! It was indeed a good memory before I leave Disted. I didn’t expect to have 2 gold this year. By the way, Disted Closed has officially ended with Kesh giving me a walkover in my final match. So, I gain another gold medal from there. =) (we both didn’t want to continue anyway). To those I owed a treat, I’ll treat you guys after exam, before I leave, ok? Thank you for all your moral support! I really appreciate it! Love you people! *hugs*

* please remind me whom I’ve owed a treat. I have short term memory disease. LoL

Merdeka? Malaysia’s independence day…What does it mean to you? Yea, I’ve received this email from BRATs asking us to drop in our thoughts for Aug Ole Brats…I was interested to write in but was a little busy and messed up with my thoughts lately so I didn’t send my thoughts in…I’ve no idea why is it this year I don’t have the feel of celebrating this day…Perhaps when I’m in school, the environment makes me feel more into this celebration (2 weeks before merdeka, the school will play those patriotic songs through the P.A system early in the morning for about 20 minutes [I remember vividly as it disturbed my sleep last time!!] haha)…

Few years back, my group of friends and I went to Prangin Mall to celebrate merdeka…As usual for school children, they will hang out during public holidays or weekends…We are one of them anyway…We went for lunch in Pizza Hut, went for a movie, sat at Starbucks updating each other…We were like more than 15 of us if I’m not mistaken, laughing aloud, cross the road as if there were no cars *there were many cars*, we just do the way we want…It was really fun although we went a little over board…At that time, that age of us, we never think so much too…Thinking back all these pure and innocent sweet memories are really those unforgettable ones…

This year I spent my merdeka shopping with mum for some groceries *all those old aunts out from nowhere all rushed to the supermarkets, standing in the middle of the walkway and blocked my way!* and just stayed at home…How boring…

-enough of merdeka-

Lately, I’ve became more and more emotional…I’ve no idea why I’m afraid whenever night comes which I’ve never have such feelings before…I used to love night time but not now anymore…Perhaps is because when everyone is sleeping soundly, includes my dog, the night is silent and still…There’s only my radio left accompanying me [at least there’s some sound] and also my hp…

When the atmosphere is quiet and cold, my mind starts to work more efficiently on other matters exclude study…I’ve been thinking bout the situation when Wei Lin is leaving and the time I’m leaving…Before I can even leave, I start to cry…Just uncontrollable when I think of leaving everything back in Penang…The same thoughts kept lingering in my mind for the past few days and is still now in my mind, that’s why I’m sitting here blogging again…I can imagine Val’s feelings of knowing that she is with her friends for the last day in class and the next day she has to leave…Now I know I’m leaving in another 4 months, I’ve got time for me to prepare but I still burst into tears, what more can you say in Val’s case…

Lately every now and then I’ll be making noise wanting to leave here to start everything from the beginning…However, when it comes to night, I’ll have different thoughts…At that moment, I don’t feel like leaving Penang anymore…Penang is where I was brought up in…Suddenly, I’ve got to leave here for few months which I’ve never do that before [maximum duration of leaving home without parents is 11 days]…Leaving Penang will also be leaving mum, dad, bro, didi, Rusty, all my buddies from school and college, Penang food, Penang beaches etc…

Obviously not only I’m thinking of the matter of leaving Penang…I’m also thinking of my coming birthday…My 18th birthday falls somewhere my finals…Why don’t UK celebrate Raya as well? So that I’ve get to celebrate my last birthday in Penang before I go any further…I don’t think I’ll get to celebrate my birthday this year as everyone will be having no mood celebrating…Everyone’s mood will be drifted away by the killer word- EXAM…How I wish I get a … *silent* =)

So happen I flipped through the book whereby my fifth form classmates and friends pen some lines…I was there laughing away alone in my room, recalling all the sweet moments we shared in class…Zhenz, miss calling each other in class, when we are just sitting next to each other? Failing History with flying colours? Laughed till burst into tears? Discussed about your Initial-D for the whole month until I can even remember the conversation of that movie? *I’ve never watch Initial-D till today* Lambeh, got excited when nothing really happen? Been our mp3 for the whole year? Barnie, partner abusing me throughout the year? Jas, my darling for 2 years consecutively? Wow, good moments indeed…Other than arguing over facts and stuff with teachers, boycott teachers etc, the best thing I ever did in my 5 years of secondary school was when I’m in my fourth form…I climbed through the window to open the door for the class…The teacher stopped me but I insisted to go on...(no waste of having fun in that famous-for-nothing-except-the-damn-bloody-strict-school-rules school) At least teachers still remember me, obviously not because of I’m a really good and obedient student but is the total opposite of it…Teachers remember me of all my bad stuff…=)

I’m tired…till here
